This piece is titled “Alderson’s Thoroughbred”, and its postcard is estimated to have been printed in the 1940s.
This is a really beautiful card with a fascinating history. The postcard features a painting of a black horse standing in a breathtaking landscape and is signed by the artist Alderson. This singular artist was actually two: Dorothy and Mary Elizabeth Alderson, twin sisters who worked together on their paintings and signed them jointly. The Aldersons grew up in Yorkshire, England and were celebrated for their paintings of animals and landscapes, especially horses. By the look of it, this horse is a thoroughbred.
This postcard was printed in Switzerland by the Stehli Brothers, who successfully ran a printing business from 1900 to 1955. The postcard does have existing damage on its front, which looks to be tape residue. To refrain from adding more damage to the card with paint, it will remain as is. This postcard painting will not have a cutout back as there is no message on the card.
